It’s no secret that Palm Beach County has a flourishing local art scene. Talent abounds! In late September three of our local artists were awarded grants at a Cultural Council of Palm Beach County luncheon.
Demetrius Klein, dancer-choreographer and Palm Beach Daily News dance critic, was surprised to hear that he had been awarded the $6,000 Randolph A. Frank Prize for the Performing Arts. “My works falls so far outside mainstream categories,” Klein explained to The Shiny Sheet. His dance company, DKDC/DIY, is community-based and his post-modern work generally embraced contemporary themes.
Dylan Evans garnered a $2,000 Frank prize as an up and coming performing artist. Evans is a choral singer with Palm Beach Opera and Delray Beach Chorale, among other locales. He is also a private voice teacher and a board member at the Delray Beach Chorale. The Frank awards honor artists whose work cultivates the performing arts in our county.
The third recipient at the luncheon, Debra Yates, plans to use her $10,000 grant to finish renovations on her Lake Worth cottage’s carport, turning it into a studio. An abstract painter, her works have been on hold for six months during these renovations.
Her grant, awarded by the Dina Baker Fund for Mature Female Artists, is given to a Palm Beach County female artist, age 60+, who shows merit as well as financial need. Along with the grant is a solo show at the Cultural Council, slated for April 28 – May 26. Just the motivation Yates needed to complete the studio renovation!
Enrich your world with the arts in Palm Beach County – the choices are endless!
